Letter to the Editor: Listen to your heart and vote

To the Editor:

It was March of 2017 when Greg Walden last hosted a public meeting at the Readiness Center here in The Dalles. This was over a year before our primary election took place. At that time, the name Jamie McLeod-Skinner was merely a whisper.

Nearly 500 constituents of District 2 were in attendance, myself included. It was then I read aloud a letter I had written to Mr. Walden, and I quote from that letter now…. “I feel you have abandoned me....for the right....and not just the right, but the far right. Where are you Greg Walden, not just physically here today, but where are you in your heart and mind? You have abandoned the middle way. You no longer represent many of your constituents. Come back to center Greg. Return to compromise and represent the whole of your District as you have been called to do and used to do.”

Two weeks later, I wrote a second letter to Greg that was delivered to him by the U.S. Postal Service. In part I wrote, “Greg you are a leader. You have years of congressional experience under your belt, and you are respected by your peers. Your voice makes a difference among them. I believe what you say and do influences others in how they think and act. I believe your leadership can be used in even more effective ways by bringing people together…not divided…even across party lines. This kind of leadership takes time and energy, but the results are positive and long lasting. I hope you will become more and more that kind of leader in our national government. You are a good man with a good heart and your service to our state is deeply appreciated. Please do what you can to build bridges…not walls.”

It has been a long 19 months since my letters reached Greg....months of continued erosion of our nation’s values and conduct. Mr. Walden’s voting record during this time has been well over 90 percent aligned with the Trump agenda. Greg obviously did not receive either of my letters with the goodwill in which they were written. I have received zero response from him or his office...ZERO!

And now it is time to vote. If you haven’t already voted, please do so. Listen to your heart and your mind and cast your ballot. Democracy depends on you.
