Gorge joins National Registration Day Tuesday

The City of The Dalles has, like many cities throughout the nation, issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 25 as National Voter Registration Day. “One of the most fundamental and sacred rights of any democracy is the right to vote; in order for our government to function effectively and respond to the needs of our people, citizens must play a role in shaping it. Each year on National Voter Registration Day, we reaffirm the strong sense of civic duty among our people and encourage friends, family members, and neighbors to get involved by registering to vote,” the city declared.

A number of voter registration events have been arranged in the region by Columbia Women’s Action Network (CWAC) at locations including The Dalles, Goldendale, Lyle Bingen, White Salmon, Hood River and Cascade Locks:

Except in Goldendale, events are 4 to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

Hood River — Rosaurers and Walmart

White Salmon — The Library

Bingen — Bentley/Long Headquarters, 115 W. Steuban

Lyle — The Post Office

Cascade Locks — Thunder Island Brewery, 515 NW Portage Road

The Dalles — Safeway

Goldendale — MarketPlace on Broadway from 9 a.m. to noon; Holcomb’s Market on Columbus from 1-4 p.m.;Public Library from 4-6 p.m.

The goal for National Voter registration Day is to increase participation by encouraging Americans to register to vote and come out to the polls this November, according to CWAC. “As a nonpartisan unofficial national holiday, National Voter registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum.”

The registration effort started in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right — the right to vote.
