BOTTOM FISHING Fishing for rockfish continues to be good with the average rockfish catch at about five or six fish per angler. Lingcod catches are good at all ports surveyed at better than one fish per angler. Bottom fishing is closed offshore of the 30-fathom line defined by latitude and longitude.
Columbia River Zone weekly fishing report
Angling for summer steelhead and spring Chinook jacks is open between Tongue Point and the I-5 Bridge. Effective Saturday May 25 through June 15 spring Chinook angling is open from Tongue Point/Rocky Point line upstream to Beacon Rock, plus the banks only from Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam. Shad angling is open from Buoy 10 upstream to the Oregon/Washington border above McNary Dam. Sturgeon angling is good in the lower Columbia (below Marker 82) as the population migrates from the Willamette down to the estuary. The estuary sturgeon season is open seven days per week during Saturday May 11 through Sunday, June 30 (or catch guideline) below the Wauna Powerlines. Walleye angling is excellent in the The Dalles and John Day pools.

Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler Counties The signs of spring are all here in the Heppner area. Sandhill cranes have been seen heading north for the summer. The official first sign of spring for the Heppner area, a Say’s phoebe has been seen and heard in the area. Our summer migrants are starting to appear.

Weekend fishing opportunities The road to Magone Lake is open and early season fishing for brook trout should be good. Twin, Weston and South Umatilla Forest ponds have been stocked and fishing should be good. The Umatilla river spring chinook season closed May 15 due to a much smaller than expected return.

Harney County Waterfowl migration has stopped and most waterfowl found now will be breeding pairs on territories and initiating nesting sites. Sandhill cranes can be found in agricultural fields throughout the Harney Basin.

Weekend fishing opportunities: Krumbo Reservoir has been stocked with 15,000 legal-sized trout and fishing should be good. Fishing on the lower Owyhee River has been good, and with the warm temperatures this week the action on the surface should get even better.

CENTRAL ZONE VIEWING Crook County The Prineville Reservoir Wildlife Management Area (WMA) North shore road is now open to motorized traffic. The WMA offers camping, shoreline angling and opportunities to see a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, otter, beaver, raptors, shorebirds and waterfowl. Maps of the wildlife area are available at the Prineville ODFW office and at Prineville Reservoir State Park office.

Weekend fishing opportunities: Trout fishing continues to be good on Big Lava, Crane Prairie, Odell and North and South Twin lakes. South Twin lake has been chosen as a venue for Cabela’s “Fish for Milions” promotion, which began Saturday, May 4 and continues through July 7. Rainbow trout have been tagged with spaghetti tags that could be worth up to $2 million to the angler lucky enough to catch one. For more information and to register.

Weekend fishing opportunities: Spring chinook fishing has slowed down in the lower Willamette River but persistent anglers are still catching a few fish. Steelhead fishing is fair on the North and South Santiam and spring chinook are starting to arrive in the system. Steelhead fishing is fair on the Clackamas River. Anglers are starting to pick up a few spring chinook on the Sandy and Clackamas rivers Trout stocking is in .full swing around the Willamette Valley and Portland metro area. Sites scheduled for stocking this week: Harriet Lake, Henry Hagg Lake, Mt. Hood Pond, Sheridan Pond, Silver Creek Reservoir, Trillium Lake, South Fork Yamhill River, Alton Baker Canal, Carmen Reservoir, Clear Lake, EE Wilson Pond, Foster Reservoir, Junction City Pond, Leaburg Lake, Salmon Creek, Smith Reservoir.

The time has come once again to honor those soldiers who died in the service of our country. We should feel that grateful remembrance more than once a year, but it is human nature to not think about those things as often as we should, so Memorial Day is a good reminder.
