Gift drive for foster youth Nov. 27

This year over 120 children in the Gorge will be spending their holidays in foster care, and area residents can help make them a little brighter by donating a holiday gift. Avenue Properties, Columbia Gorge CASA and Mid-Columbia Health Foundation have joined forces to create a Foster Youth Holiday Gift Drive, Nov. 27 through Dec. 15.

Gilliam County grant enables housing

Work has officially begun on a single-family home in Arlington, thanks to a new loan and grant incentive program in Gilliam County. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Nov. 1 at the construction site, celebrating the first construction project to be funded through the Gilliam County Attainable Housing (GCAH) program administered by Pioneer Community Development Corporation (PCDC).

Letter to the Editor: Hopeless backwater?

To the editor: The Dalles Police Department has been awarded three grants to do patrols targeting D.U.I., cell phone use, and failing to yield to pedestrians. I abandoned old town last year when the same targeted sweeps were in effect. What do these good intentions do to the efforts of bringing business (shoppers) back to old town?

Book drive for foster youth set

A book drive for children in foster care in area counties runs from Nov. 23-Dec. 15. The hope is to collect books for each of the approximately 200 children in foster care in Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam and Wheeler counties.

Veterans honored in TD

Six residents at the Oregon Veterans’ Home were honored Nov. 15, when they were presented the military medals and other awards they earned in a ceremony at the home. The range of service of these decorated Army veterans spanned several decades between World War II and Vietnam.

Project ELFF runs Dec. 4-6

Project ELFF (Everybody Loves a Fire Fighter) will be hitting the streets Dec. 4-6, as it celebrates its 32nd year of collecting non-perishable food for local food banks. Fire apparatus will be announcing their presence in neighborhoods with lights and sirens going, said Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue Chief Bob Palmer.

D21 hears complaints

The D21 school board heard at a listening session last Thursday that schools need replaced, but the recently failed bond to replace four schools sought too much money, over too long a period. A number of people said the district had low income or blue collar residents who couldn’t afford the bond.

Beauty school gets makeover

The Gorge Academy of Cosmetology’s slogan is “creating beauty inside and out” and that doesn’t only apply to making people look fabulous. Owner Kerri Weed and her husband Tom have rehabbed the inside of the circa 1890s building at 422 E. 2nd St.—where they peeled up five layers of flooring to reveal the original, rich wood flooring—and are now working to do the same on the outside.

Dufur tumbles its way into 1A title game

BEND – From the outside looking in, fans and spectators witnessed a crowning achievement, as the No. 1-ranked and undefeated Dufur Rangers captured their 32nd straight victory, 46-0 over Hosanna Christian in a semifinal contest played Saturday at Summit High School in Bend. In the locker room following the win, however, players and coaches were lamenting the many mistakes, missed assignments, mental gaffes and undisciplined penalties that marred a lopsided outcome.

Riverhawk runners get postseason awards

For The Dalles senior Emma Mullins, running has taught her how to focus on what’s important, from friends and family, to hard work and dedication. As the curtain closes on one phase of her career, Mullins can stand proud of her accomplishments in the cross country circuit. She earned first-team all-Intermountain Conference and was named to the all-state squad on the third team. Along with Mullins, Samuel Alvarez secured third-team all-state recognition and a first-team all-league bid to lead the boy’s team.
