An invitation to prayer

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is offering Taizé prayer services during Lent on Sundays at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Fifth and Union streets. Lent, a preparation period in the Christian liturgical calendar leading up to Easter Sunday, is used as a time of prayer, penance and fasting for Christian communities to prepare for the celebration of Easter.

Thomasian signs on to play at Clark College

In her freshman year as a softball player, Jodi Thomasian came up to the plate in a pressure situation with a runner at second base. Thomasian will use the relentless drive and passion at Clark Community College in Vancouver, Wash., where she accepted scholarships to play both softball and basketball for the Penguins.

Dufur’s Crawford jumps from 8-man to Div. III

When thinking of the male influences in his life, Dufur senior Curtis Crawford names off his teammates and coaches, his father, Rick Crawford, grandfather, Ron Townsend and family friend, Russ Pishion as crucial mainstays in his development. But, mama is No. 1. It is that stronghold and positive example that has given Curtis a will to expect the best from himself, as he approaches the next phase of life as a football player at George Fox University, where he is slated for duties as a receiving tight end at the Division III school.

Truck overturns in TD

One of two tankers pulled by a semi rolled over early Wednesday on Sixth Street across from Cousin's Inn and Restaurant. The truck was pulling out of a parking area when the back trailer sunk in the soft shoulder of the road and tipped. The truck was carrying a load of oil, and was checked for leaks, but no leaks were found, according to witnesses. Contributed photo Bob Lindsay

Dist.: 2 Hours Late. Snow Rts: Pepper and Corn. Early Dismissal Canceled Head Start /Early Childhood Centers: Mid-Columbia Children's Council: The Dalles and Wahtonka 2 hour delay. All Child Care will open at 9:30, EHS/HS classrooms will open at 10. No PM class; Maupin Head Start class canceled.

TD finds BB gun ‘no threat’

A BB gun was found in a student’s backpack at The Dalles Middle School a month ago, but school officials issued no notices to parents because it was determined not to be a threat, the superintendent said.

The Dalles got a reminder that it is still winter when heavy wind-driven snow briefly created blizzard-like conditions before dawn Sunday morning on Sixth St. and Cherry Heights Rd, above, and throughout the area. A mix of snow and sun is forecast through Thursday.

SWC scores first district crown since 1983

MADRAS – The South Wasco County Redsides have always used a team-first approach to athletics. Playing without injured Jada Myers, the Lady Redsides had three players foul out and two other finish with four fouls, and still had enough to come away with a 51-41 victory over Sherman to capture their first Big Sky Conference championship since the 1983 season.

TD’s Scott locks in fifth-place honors at state

JR Scott went 3-1 in consolation action to pick up fifth place, and senior teammate Glenn Breckterfield went 1-2 in his final matches at the OSAA State Wrestling Championships at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Football has several changes ahead of fall year

PORTLAND (OSAA) — Players in high school football who are detected with missing or improperly worn equipment during playing action will be removed from the game for at least one down, unless the improper equipment is directly attributable to a foul by the opponent. This revision in Rule 1-5-5 and other related rules was one of five rules changes for the 2018 season recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 19-21 meeting in Indianapolis.

TD skiers get two races atop Timberline

Due to the lack of snow this year, The Dalles ski team has missed out on every race on its schedule, except one, which meant coach Dane Klindt’s crew had to pull double duty last Sunday in a pair of giant slalom runs on the Paintbrush Course at Timberline Ski Resort.
