100 Years Ago-1913 Twenty members of the Old Fort Dalles Historical Society enjoyed a picnic at Big Eddy Saturday. They were very pleasantly entertained at the home of Mrs. George E. Goodwin, who was assisted by Mesdames Polhemus, Saunders, Woods and Maury.

Looking Back on May 5

100 Years Ago-1913 With the Methodist, Christian, United Brethren and Baptist churches as plaintiffs, a suit was filed by Bright, Bryant & Ellis, attorneys, in the circuit court late Saturday afternoon against Mayor Judd S. Fish, Recorder George Ross, Treasurer Edward Kurtz and members of the city council, as defendants, the object of the legal proceedings being to prevent the city from issuing saloon licenses in the future. It is claimed the council has no legal right to grant liquor permits because of a charter omission which was made when the state legislature re-enacted a section of the local charter in 1905.

Looking back at April 28 in Wasco County

April 28 20 Years Ago-1993 A partial restoration of inexpensive power means the expected 72 layoffs at Columbia Aluminum will total only 58, officials said. In its first ever power-related layoffs, the plant in late March identified 72 surplus positions, Plant Manager Bill Bell said. Of those positions thus far, 32 have been laid off, he said. Over the next 17 days, 32 downed pots will be placed back in production, Bell said, but 92 of the plant’s 526 pots will stay down.
