Fast start vaults No. 5 Dufur

The No. 5-ranked Dufur Rangers came out swinging early and often in their blowout win over Ione. Asa Farrell scored three touchdowns and both Anthony Thomas and Tanner Masterson added two scores apiece to lead the undefeated Rangers to a 54-8 victory Friday at Dufur High School.

TD’s rally falls short in loss to Gladstone

When it seemed like The Dalles was about lose in blowout fashion, they staged enough of a rally to put a scare into Gladstone. The Hawks trailed 27-7 and scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to inch to within a 27-21 deficit with possession at the 5:58 mark, but could not complete the comeback bid in a 42-21 loss to the fourth-ranked Gladiators Friday on Homecoming night at Sid White Field.

Winter constellations to emerge during October

October, our first full month of fall, brings colorful leaves, a nip of frost in the air, and very dark skies when the weather is clear. The bright planets Saturn and Mars are visible, but fainter, and Jupiter is sinking toward the sunset this month. However, the bright winter constellations are appearing on the eastern horizon, and the Milky Way is still stunning on dark nights.

After tie, TD soccer tied for first in IMC

When he first signed on as head coach of The Dalles boys’ soccer in 2016, Matthew Dallman wanted to build one of the premier programs in the state. Fast forward two years and he has the Riverhawks currently in a two-way tie for first place and in contention for an Intermountain Conference championship.

Dufur and SWC add to streaks; Sherman loses at Union

After a more than four-hour trip to Enterprise, the No. 5-ranked Dufur Rangers got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 52-16 triumph Friday in eight-man football action. During their winning streak, the undefeated Rangers (4-0 overall) have outscored opponents by a 244-84 margin and have used a variety of weapons to put the opposition on their heels.

TD boys sweep top honors at Nelson Invitational

The Dalles boy’s cross country swept the varsity and junior varsity races and both girl’s teams each had runner-up finishes at the 26th annual Bridgette Nelson Invitational Saturday at Sorosis Park. Emma Mullins tacked on a victory for the girls and Samuel Alvarez claimed second place out of 47 runners to lead their varsity squads.

Riverhawks go yeehaw on the Cowboys

Flying around at a dizzying pace, The Dalles defense unleashed a flurry of big hits and methodically chipped away at the spirit and will of Crook County. Over the course of four quarters, TD limited Crook County to 192 yards on 69 plays, 2 of 14 on third downs and forced five turnovers, posted 3.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss in a 31-0 shutout Friday at Sid White Field.

CGBA finalizes its tryout times

Basketball season is fast approaching. The Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy will again be organizing traveling basketball teams this winter for local boys and girls from the third-through-eighth grades with a tryout tentatively set to run on Sunday, Oct. 28 at The Dalles Middle School. “I’m looking forward to this season,” CGBA coordinator Greg Cummings said.

Volleyball teams jockeying for district spots

MORO – South Wasco County jumped up to No. 19 in the rankings and second place in the Big Sky Conference after picking up a pair of four-game victories against Sherman and Dufur this week. Thursday, SWC was in Dufur for a match with the Lady Rangers, and Kyrsten Sprouse put up eight kills, 10 digs and seven aces, Madisen Davis tallied seven kills and 23 digs, and Jada Myers had eight kills, 10 digs and seven blocks in a four-game victory.
