A new challenge awaits Kathryn Bradford

Last offseason, The Dalles senior Kathryn Bradford had an athletic moment of clarity. She wanted to make a few technical changes, add to workout regimen and turn softball into much more than just an extra-curricular activity. Kathryn recently received a scholarship offer to play outfield on the Mount Hood Community College softball team, joining her older sister, Maddy, on the roster.

Scott rises up for first place at HR Elks Invitational

HOOD RIVER – When looking at the 182-pound mindscape, The Dalles junior JR Scott figures to be one of the main threats to the competition. Scott moved his overall record to 18-3 on the year, as he won all three of his matches for championship recognition at the Hood River Elks Invitational Saturday.

Swim coach encouraged by HRV Invite marks

Although dwindled down in roster size because of illness and injuries, The Dalles swim coach Shea MacNab found a way to shuffle things around with several athletes in different events in an effort to maximize their performances. Natalie Varland and Caleb Miller turned in runner-up finishes, and the varsity swimmers notched nine top-8 outputs at the Hood River Invite Saturday.

TD hoops drop league game to Hermiston

With its first league test of the season, The Dalles girls’ basketball team fell behind by an 18-13 margin through one quarter and put itself in contention. Hermiston had other plans, however, as the Lady Bulldogs led 44-22 at the half, and finished on a 32-22 spurt to take a 76-44 win Friday in The Dalles.

Hawk skiers get back to action at Meadows

While the lack of snow has made it a challenge for all ski teams to train, the show went on without a hitch for slalom runs this past Saturday. On the Gemini Course at Meadows, freshman Maddie Gragg had a good start to her ski career with ninth place, and the duo of Louis Red Cloud and Matt Gragg pulled out top-20 finishes, out of a field of 38.

No. 10 SWC wins versus Dufur

Abby Birman scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and the No. 10-ranked South Wasco County Redsides forged a comeback to capture their seventh straight league win of the season, 53-39, over Dufur in girls’ basketball action Friday at Dufur High School.

Honald earns Under Armour All-America invite

For The Dalles High School baseball player Spencer Honald, he had to go through countless hours of rehabilitation and strength training to recover from a broken ankle sustained during the spring season. Honald earned a spot on the Under Armour Team One squad after a Baseball Factory tryout and secured an invitation to play shortstop with the team at the Southern California Classic in October, where he went 3 for 9 with a double.

As a coach, Greg Cummings could only smile at what he saw on the hardwood, as two Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy teams duked it out in the championship game of the two-day Gorge Hoops Invitational. Spanning further than the final score, however, was the fact that this title contest also offered a glimpse at a promising future for The Dalles basketball.

With the loss of some standout seniors, The Dalles swim team had some spots to fill on its varsity roster. Through the first four events, the Riverhawks have put up some solid marks and finishes, the latest push coming at last Saturday’s White Buffalo Classic held in Madras.
