TD shines in John Day

The Dalles swim team racked up four relay wins and 11 individual victories, led by two wins each by Kennedy Abbas and Thatcher Dray and four firsts and three seconds from Lydia DiGennaro at the three-day John Day Invitational ending July 22. The team’s last meet of the season will be in Bend on the weekend of Aug. 11-12, so with the boys and girls combining for second place in the standings, coach Scott McKay is looking forward to his group making a big splash to close out the summer.

CG Hustlers outlast Roseburg in 10 innings, 4-3

Twists and turns and an emotional roller coaster ruled the day Thursday for the Columbia Gorge Hustlers. Ben Nelson pulled off multiple Houdini acts on the mound in seven scoreless innings of relief and he ended up scoring the game-winning run on a two-out RBI single by Dalles Seufalemua to lead the Columbia Gorge Hustlers to a 4-3 victory in 10 innings against Roseburg at the American Legion State Tournament in North Bend.

Babe Ruth Stars get things going in Portland

The Dalles 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars posted a 1-2 record in their first three pool play games of the Babe Ruth Regional Tournament in Portland, ending Thursday’s action with a 3-0 loss to Idaho by no-hitter. Although the team finished without a hit, they had chances to get within striking distance, but left five runners on base, three in scoring position, including one at third base in the fifth inning. In five of the seven innings, TD had at least one runner on base.

Six cheer members named All-Americans

With fires creating chaos around the Greater Columbia River Gorge area, The Dalles cheerleading squad approached last weekend’s National Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp with heavy hearts. They dedicated their performances to those impacted. The Riverhawks fielded 31 athletes for action at their annual camp from July 17-20 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, as 14 members were nominated for All-American honors and a handful of others received various camp awards.

10U Westside Timbers net first at Beaverton Cup

Coach Oscar Nunez formed 10U and 12U girls’ soccer teams, called Westside Timbers The Gorge, for action at the three-day Beaverton Cup last weekend with the two groups combining for a 5-2-2 record and a 21-9 scoring margin. “The level of competition these gorge girls took on was super-intense,” Nunez said.

Hustlers tuned up for legion state tourney

NEWPORT – The Columbia Gorge Hustlers wrapped up baseball action at the Newport Tournament with a 1-3 record and posted double-figure hits in every game and totaled 30 runs, finishing the weekend with a 15-8 loss on Sunday to Lower Columbia Basin. Head coach Steve Sugg liked the way the offense executed in the four games, but looked to the defense and pitching as key components to the team’s success at the upcoming American Legion Tournament this week in Coos Bay.

Swimmers get stronger

Across the board, a majority The Dalles swim team showed vast improvements on their times at the 52nd annual Pendleton Open from July 6-8 in Pendleton. Of the impressive group of swimmers, all of TD’s points were scored by the 9-year-old and under swimmers with Sam Ford, 7, scoring the most points at 28.

All-Stars expect a tough challenge at regionals

Hunter Padberg said he and his teammates are not settling on one accomplishment, they have their hearts set on much more. Even with a state championship in the bag, the focus of The Dalles’ 13-15-year-old All-Stars is putting together another all-around slate of games at the Babe Ruth Regional Tournament at David Douglas High School in Portland.

Heroes all around as Hustlers clinch league

Starting the bottom of the seventh inning down 7-2, the Columbia Gorge Hustlers battled back with a dramatic comeback to clinch a league title, as Baily Hajicek smacked a three-run triple to tie the score at 7-7, and after a walk to Michael Armstrong, Johnson executed a perfect RBI squeeze bunt, which plated Hajicek for the winning run in CG’s 8-7 win and two-game sweep over Hillsboro.

Stars can’t get the bounces in two losses

With The Dalles hitting the field against West Linn and Gresham-Barlow this weekend at the 14U Babe Ruth State Championships, there was a disadvantage in terms of cohesiveness and flow. In two state matchups, The Dalles was eliminated from postseason contention after losses to West Linn and Gresham-Barlow, capped by a season-ending 16-5 mercy-ruled loss Saturday in tournament play in The Dalles.

Hustlers boost win total to 24 in Sunday sweep

The Columbia Gorge Hustlers lost the first two games at the Seaside Wood Bat Tournament to Seaside and Hood River by a combined 18-8 spread, but bounced back for a lopsided win against Madison and added a two-game sweep over league opponent, St. Helens, Sunday.

TD All-Stars capture state championship

Sometimes it is the smallest factors that can push teams over the top. In Saturday’s state-title clinching win over East Portland, The Dalles’ Keon Kiser engaged in a 12-pitch at-bat that not only led to the early departure of East Portland’s starter, but opened the door to a four-run third inning in what turned into a 13-3 mercy-ruled victory Saturday in Babe Ruth baseball action at Kramer Field.

Hustlers climb up the league standings

In the opening-game of the three-day Seaside Tournament, the Columbia Gorge Hustlers have their six-game winning streak snapped Thursday by an 11-6 margin versus Seaside. The Hustlers (21-10 overall) totaled 10 hits and five walks and left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded in their three-run sixth-inning surge, where they got to within an 8-6 deficit, but an inning-ending strikeout short-circuited the rally.
