Gonzalez’s gem has Hawks trending upward

With their backs against the wall, The Dalles Riverhawks needed a breakthrough performance to climb back into postseason contention. Jose Gonzalez was the right man for the job. The senior right-hander tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts with no earned runs, and also added two hits and three RBIs to help lead the Riverhawks to a 5-2 victory over Hermiston in baseball action from Bob Williams Field.

Softball has rally cut short, 11-7

The Dalles softball can take a lot from Tuesday’s loss – they kept fighting until the very end. Down 11-1 through four and a half innings, TD scored a run in the fifth and added five in the sixth to get to within a four-deficit, but could not finish the roaring comeback in what ended up being an 11-7 loss to No. 7-ranked Hermiston at 16th Street Ballpark.

Sherman throttles Dufur, 20-2

The No. 9-ranked Sherman Huskies captured their sixth consecutive win, after a 20-2 mercy-ruled triumph over Dufur Tuesday at Dufur City Park.

Hawks place 11th at High Desert Challenge

Monday’s High Desert Challenge proved to be a challenge for The Dalles boys’ golf team that had hit the links against a highly-skilled field without the services of Jacob Ford. Tyler Vassar carded a team-best 82 on his scorecard for 17th place, and Aidan Telles followed with his 85 to score 23rd place, out of 57 golfers on the par-72 Tetherow Golf Club Course in Bend.

Riverhawk girls score season-best

With each passing tournament, The Dalles head coach Amy Wilson continues to be amazed. The Lady Riverhawks had two personal bests from Lydia and Bella Evans, Samantha Stansbury posted her best tournament score, and Jaeden Biehn was two strokes behind her top marks, as they combined for a team-best 475 at Monday’s Mountain View Invite at Awbrey Glen Golf Club in Bend.

TD baseball nearly sweeps, but settles for split

A bounce here or a big hit there and The Dalles baseball team could have pulled off a doubleheader sweep or been swept. As it was, through six hours of varsity action, the Riverhawks lost the first game by a 7-6 score on a walk-off hit by pitch, but then rebounded in the second game with two runs in the top of the seventh to secure a come-from-behind 7-6 victory and the split Saturday in Hermiston.

TD takes road sweep loss

In two games at Hermiston Saturday, The Dalles softball squad lost the first game, 7-6, and ended up losing the nightcap in mercy-ruled fashion, 15-5, in Columbia River Conference play in Hermiston. Faced with a five-game losing skid to start league, TD head coach Kim Kiser knows things will turn around enough for her team make a late-season postseason charge.

The Dufur Rangers mustered just six hits, one walk and a hit by pitch and 18 strikeouts in a doubleheader sweep loss by final scores of 6-0 and 10-0 to Culver in league action Friday at Dufur City Park.

TD racks up 35 personal records at Kiwanis Meet

The Dalles track and field team posted 35 personal records and the girls’ squad had 18 make podium, including wins by Emma Mullins and Paulina Finn to score third-place honors at the 10-team Kiwanis Twilight Invitational Meet Friday at Hermiston High School.

SWC girls third at CW Invite

Following her record-breaking efforts at the Mustang Invitational last week in Heppner, South Wasco County senior Ana Popchock scored victories in both hurdles events and claimed first place in the triple jump to help the Redsides to 54 points and third place at the Condon-Wheeler Invite Friday in Condon.

Sherman nets six in top-5, one win

The Sherman teams had to contend with 18 other schools in their respective divisions, 13 from the 2A-through-5A ranks, and were able to rack up seven personal records at the 16th annual Portland Christian Invitational Meet Saturday in Portland.

Dufur fares well at two meets

The Dufur Rangers had tough meets at the Condon-Wheeler Invite and the Portland Christian Invitational on back-to-back afternoons and totaled four wins and five seconds, as the boys scored top-5 outcomes at both venues. At Friday’s Condon-Wheeler Invite, the 4x100-meter relay squad of Asa Farrell, Abraham Kilby, Anthony Thomas and Tanner Masterson set their season-best with a final time of 45.49 to take first place.

TD girls take a step forward at Hermiston

Back on April 4, The Dalles girls’ tennis team could only muster 37 set points in an 8-0 home loss to Hermiston. Thursday, Arlette Santillan claimed a singles victory, and the No. 3 doubles tandem of Karla Najera and Pearl Guzman added a straight sets triumph, as the Lady Riverhawks racked up 44 set wins in a 6-2 loss at Hermiston High School.

TD drops match with HRV, 7-1

Earlier in the week, The Dalles hosted Hood River Valley in a league match and lost 7-1, with Arlette Santillan taking the team’s lone win Tuesday at The Dalles High School. Although the score appeared lopsided, the Riverhawks had three matches decided by third-set tiebreakers and two others dropped by an average margin of 2.25 points, both in straight sets.
