Barbara Jean Gray, 81, died Aug. 3, 2013, at home with family after a long illness.
She was born May 14, 1932, in Portland, Ore., the only child of Victor Louis Metzger and Vera A. Jaques. She studied at the University of Washington, and married Charles L. Gray of Wasco, Ore., on February 21, 1951. They lived in Echo, OR, Wasco, OR and Moro, OR, but spent most of their lives on the family farm near Wasco, and moved to The Dalles in 2008.
She was a member of the Wasco Methodist Church and active in the choir. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls in Sherman County. She was a 4-H leader for over 30 years in both sewing and cooking, and a fair judge in subsequent years. She was instrumental in the development of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) locally and statewide. She was also a Master Gardner.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Les; daughters Cheryl Woods and her husband Mike, Centerville, Wash.; and Rolinda (Lynna) Meakins and her husband Robert, Hermiston, Ore.; son Brett Gray and his wife Trena, Wasco, Ore.; grandchildren Kate Woods, Washington, D.C.; Scott and Jaime Meakins, Irrigon, Ore.; Michelle Stellflug and (Bob), Richland, Wash.; Katrina Marshall Cooper (Ash), Senlac, Saskatchewan; Eric and Renate Meakins, Irrigon; Tiffany Tillman (Travis), Soldotna, Alaska; and Brooke Gray, Boston, Ma.; and great-grandchildren Bryan Meakins, Ian Meakins and Declan Meakins.
She was preceded in death by her parents Victor and Vera Metzger and by great-grandson Hayden Meakins.
A memorial will be Friday, Aug. 9, at 4 p.m., at the Wasco Methodist Church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to Heart of Hospice,2621 Wasco Ave, Hood River, OR 97031, or Columbia Gorge CASA, CGCASA, PO Box 663, Hood River, OR 97031.
