Mathew “Matt” Charles Nettleton, 78, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., for 32 years, died at home Monday, July 22, 2013.
He was born Dec. 22, 1934 in Estacada, Ore., the second of four children to James and Sara Maude (Sothern) Nettleton. He was raised in the Owyhee mountains area of Southwest Idaho, graduating from Columbia Prep, Portland, Ore., in 1953. He then attended the University of Idaho and Boise State College.
He served in the US Army 82nd Airborne and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. His time as a line chief-paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne was some of his best memories.
On June 6, 1981, he and Rosemary Bailey were married in St. Helens, Ore.
He was a storyteller and had many adventures being raised ranching. His heart remained in the Owyhee’s no matter where he lived. His working years were spent mostly farming and ranching but he also worked as a mechanic and in construction.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary Bailey, sons James Nettleton and his wife Erin, Meridian, Idaho; Josiah Nettleton and his wife Cinamin, Aurora, Colo.; and Jacob Nettleton, The Dalles, Ore.; siblings Tim Nettleton and his wife Charlene, Murphy, Idaho; and Nick Nettleton and his wife Betty Ann, Mountain Home, Idaho; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Marilyn Black.
Private family services will be held in Idaho.
