Verne Archie Newell, 87, lifetime resident of Underwood,
Wash. died May 29, 2013 at a care facility inThe Dalles. He was born on
July 2, 1925 in Edgerton, Canadato Paul E. and Alma Asbury Newell. The family
moved to Underwood,Wash. when he was a toddler. He attended gradeschool
in Underwood and graduated from Columbia High School in White Salmon, Wash.
in 1944. He played violin in high school and was selected to travel to San
Francisco to play at the Golden Gate International Exhibition with the Junior
Musicians of America. He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth
(Betty) Ann Wess in 1946. He worked in his parents’ Underwood orchard
and for neighboring orchardist Louis Thun until1951, when he went to
work for Broughton Lumber Company as the saw filer, millwright and foreman
for the resaw. He worked for Broughton Lumber Company until its
closure in 1986. During their marriage, Verne and Betty built a
home near his folks’ and filled it with their six children.
As the kids married (most settling nearby on land their parents gave
them) , the grandkids began to arrive in 1970. In June of 1985 He married
Charlene Junker of The Dalles, adding another son, Willie Junker to the
family. He was preceded in passing by his eldest daughter Cecilia Stone, his
parents and his sister Cecile Farrar. He is survived by his wife Charlene Newell,
Grass Valley, Ore.; first wife Elizabeth (Betty) Boi leau and chi ldren
Sharon (Jim) Bryan, Paul ( S a l l y ) Newe l l , Tim (Karen) Newell and Jayne
(Scott) Allen all of Underwood; Lester (Shelley) Newell of Stabler and Willie
(Amy) Junker of The Dalles, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be June 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
in White Salmon, Wash. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to
Home At Last pet rescue.
