James was born on Sept. 15, 1930 in The Dalles, Oregon, the son of Estoll Sr. and Elizabeth Hartley. He attended grade school in Grass Valley, Oregon and graduated from high school in Moro, Oregon in 1948. In 1952 he graduated from Willamette University and then was drafted into the US Army. After leaving Camp Roberts in California he was sent to France, where he worked in an Army hospital.
After his military service he attended the University of Washington graduate school. He went to work at U.S. Bank as a trust officer in 1954 and remained there for a decade, until medical problems prevented his continuing. He married Ann Feyen in 1963 and they had a son Alan Wynn in 1964.
Surviving family members are his brother Harry Hartley of Condon, Oregon; son Alan Hartley of Portland and
granddaughters Athena and Anastasia Bubenik-Hartley of Portland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
