Stephen Leslie Riese died on November 10, 2013 at OHSU from complications associated with leukemia. Stephen was born in San Rafael, CA on January 13, 1953. Stephen grew up in Pilot Rock, OR and Shoreline, WA.
Stephen attended Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska and graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Forest Management in 1977.
He loved hiking, swimming, and the outdoors. Stephen served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Chad from 1977-1979, and married Karen J. Ratz on September 25, 1982 in Grants Pass, OR. They had 31 wonderful years together.
Stephen was a soil conservationist for the USDA-NRCS in Salem, Moro, Condon, Tangent, and The Dalles, Oregon. In February 1982 he was ordained as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He served as an Elder Commissioner to the Cascades Presbytery and as an Elder Commissioner to the 205th General Assembly (1993), as well as many other church
commissions and committees.
From 1991 to 2002 he served as a Presbyterian commissioned lay pastor in the Mount Adams Larger Parish which included churches in Mill A and Trout Lake, WA.
When illness prevented him from actively preaching and teaching he began writing. Stephen published three books, and was finishing the fourth when he was suddenly called home.
Stephen is survived by his wife Karen Riese, sons William and Andrew Riese, daughter Katie Riese Schenck and her husband Jeff, and daughter Elizabeth Riese, all of The Dalles; parents Raymond and Margaret Riese of Shoreline, WA; sister Merrilee Johnson of Las Vegas, NV; sister Robyn Albert and her husband Louis of Fresno, CA; aunt Shirley Croes of Kirkland, WA; aunt Marilyn Snow and her husband Charlie of Shoreline, WA; uncle Wilbur Wood and his wife Lorie of Vancouver, WA; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Mark Allen Riese.
A Memorial Service will take place on
Saturday, November 30th, 2 p.m., at Gateway Presbyterian Church, The Dalles.
Memorial donation suggestions are the Union Gospel Mission of Portland, Portland Rescue Mission, Columbia Gorge Pregnancy Resource Center, or
Acclaiming Christ Through Sports (ACTS).
