Ida Helbling of The Dalles, Oregon, passed away quietly in her home on September 25th, 2013. She was born on October 25th, 1929 to Carl and Emma Maier in Hettinger, ND, and grew up on the family farm near Haynes, ND. She married Donald Helbling on March 15th, 1952, in Virginia Beach, VA, while he was stationed at Ft Story. They farmed for a short time before moving to Minneapolis, MN. Later, they moved to Bellevue, WA before settling in Yakima. Ida worked outside the home at various jobs in addition to being a homemaker and raising two children. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, doing word puzzles, and crocheting. After retiring in 1992, Ida and Don traveled full time in their motor home for ten years. They then settled in The Dalles, OR. Ida is survived by her husband Donald, son Roger and his wife Kay of West Linn, OR , daughter JoAnn of The Dalles, OR and two grandsons Jacob and Emerson Helbling, sisters Freda Hoffland of Lemmon, SD and Bertha Gossen of Rogers, MN, and brother Ed Maier of Dickinson, ND, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Ida was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Esther, Edna, Irene and half brothers and sisters. Private family services will be at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland, OR. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery. At the family's request, condolences can be made in memory of Ida Helbling to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Catholic Charities.
