Abner Donald McKinney, 76, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died at home Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013.
He was born March 16, 1937, in Hot Springs, Ark., to Ira and Lois (Hitchcock) McKinney. He was raised and educated in Arkansas, graduating from Hot Springs High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the Ramstien Air Force Base in Germany. He and his twin brother Doyle played on the baseball team for the Ramstien Rams and travelled throughout Germany. He came to The Dalles in 1960.
In 1964 he and Beverly Moore were married. He worked for 34 years for Harvey Aluminum, Martin Marietta and Goldendale Columbia Aluminum.
An avid golfer, he was a member of The Dalles Country Club and the Oregon State Jr. and Sr. Golf Association. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, The American Legion and was a past member of the Elks Lodge. He was also involved with Babe Ruth Baseball for many years.
Survivors include his wife Beverly McKinney, daughter Mary McDonnell and son Craig McKinney,
all of The Dalles; sister Helen Johnston and her husband Don, Hot Springs, Ark.; brother Jerry Hull, Memphis, Tenn.; sister-in-law Mary McKinney, Hot Springs, Ark.; three grandchildren Tyler McDonnell, Portland, Ore.; Jake McDonnell, New Brunswick, N.J.; and Katie Grove, Wyo. Two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother Doyle McKinney, a sister, Hazel Pitts and a brother Gary Hull and his mother Lois Hull.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Celilo Cancer Center or Heart of Hospice.
