Alexander, “Fred” Dunn was born March 16, 1930 to Elsie Sarah Mabe Dunn and Acey Fred Dunn at the Fletcher home at Mt. Vernon, Oregon.
Fred was the oldest of three children, Fred, Robert and Lota Anna, the little sister who did not survive her first day.
Fred attended school at Waldron, Richmond, Kinzua and Wheeler County High School, but dropped out after his sophomore year to work at Kinzua Pine Mills.
He joined the Army in 1951. Fred served in Japan as an Occupation Forces of WWII and then as Support Forces for the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1953 and returned to Kinzua.
He later married Evelyn Harrison of Condon and moved there. He and Evelyn adopted, son Steven, and then moved to The Dalles where they adopted their daughter Leslie. He and Evelyn later divorced.
Fred worked for Wasco County Sherriff’s Office in 1970, he started as jailer, then a sworn Deputy. He did river patrol and search and rescue, rifle man, sharp shooter, and was promoted to Corrections Manager.
In 1978 he married Linda G. McCully. He helped raise her daughter, Stephany Holmes, and became a second Dad to all the Holmes children. He was Grandpa Fred to all of their children and grandchildren. He had 4 grandchildren through Steve and Leslie.
When he added another family he decided that golfing would be a great sport to participate in as it could be something that could be done as a family. He retired in 1991 and moved back to Fossil, where he played lots of golf. He loved having projects to keep him busy. The last few years he enjoyed spending time visiting with neighbor Dave Gutzman where be became the supervisor. LOL.
He had many stories of the old days on his grandparents ranch about hunting and fishing stories that would go on forever. Some of the stories he wrote down were meant to be shared later. He liked his whiskey and cigarettes, starting to smoke at the age of 10.
He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother, Robert (Bob Lee).
He is survived by his wife Linda of Fossil, his daughter Leslie and her sons of Walla Walla, WA; son Steve of Arcata, CA, and his 2 children, along with step-daughters, Stephanie Holmes, Debbie Carper, Belinda Holmes and step son, Guye Holmes, all of the Bend area.
He always said the step kids were as much his as the ones who carried his name.
He loved to hunt with friends and family members, brother-in-law Delray McCully and his son Zack, nephew, Stan Dunn, son-in-law Ron Carper and many friends from the Wasco County Dept., and last but not least his daughter, Leslie and her boys.
He was proud of his service to his county, and he loved to verbally wrangle with Stephanie about her choice of the Marine Corp.
