JC Thompson, age 83, left our presence to meet his Savior on Thursday, March 20, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born to Charlotte Leslie (Mack) & James Aaron Thompson in Covington County Alabama. He attended Straughn High School.
He relocated to the Northwest at the age of 19 where he became a fruit farmer. He met Ruth Cecilia Newby in Grandview, Washington. JC served in the Army from Feb. 1951 – Jan. 1953 as a lineman in the 315th Sig. Const. Bn. After his military service he returned to the Yakima Valley where he married Cecilia on February 15, 1953. JC farmed a fruit ranch in Granger, Washington.
He and Cecilia had three children; Ramona, Dorothy, and Tim. JC helped build and was an active member of the first Southern Baptist Church in Granger, Washington. In 1971 he relocated to The Dalles, Oregon where he operated a cherry ranch on Five Mile Road. He was a founding deacon of Emmanuel Baptist Church and actively involved in the Gideons.
When JC retired from farming he pursued several business interests and enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his wife and visiting friends. In 1981, he returned to Andalusia, Alabama to be near his siblings. In 1995 JC and Cecilia returned to The Dalles, Oregon. JC enjoyed spending time with family, friends, golfing, and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his mother Charlotte Leslie (Mack) Short and Step-father Arthur B. Short, father, James A. Thompson, and grandson, Timothy Zane Thompson.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Cecilia (Newby) Thompson, his siblings Glenda Chisum and husband Gene, Ellen Helms, Lamar Short and wife Kathy, Charlotte Hawkins; his children Ramona Collins and husband Sean, Dorothy Krueger and husband Randy, Tim Thompson and wife Naomi; his grandchildren Jennifer Gonzalez-Krueger and husband Jesus, Robert Krueger and wife Marie, Gail Horton Maravi and husband Gabriel, Janet Strege and husband Chris, Erin Horton, Meghann and Kendall Thompson; his great grandchildren, Isabelle, Monica, and Alex Gonzalez, Dylan Krueger, Michael, Natalie, and Gabriel Maravi, along with numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, March 26, 1:00 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church on the corner of West 10th and Snipes. The family requests memorials to be made to Providence Hospice of the Gorge, 1630 Woods Court, Hood River, Oregon, 97031 or the charity of your choice.
