Virginia Laughlin was born on September 23, 1912 in Klondike, Oregon in the home of her grandparents, A.B. and Elizabeth Potter. She passed away on November 6, 2014 at Aspen Ridge in Bend Oregon. Prior to that, she had lived in Bend with her daughter, Gingir, for several years. Virginia was 102 years old.
Virginia's grandparents settled in Sherman County in the early 1800's. A.B. Potter bought the General Store at Klondike in 1889. Virginia's parents were Raymond and Mayme Morehouse.
They farmed in Sherman County, and Virginia retained vivid memories of the beautiful horses her father owned, the work horses Babe and Toots, in particular.
She attended the "little red schoolhouse" in Klondike, the Wasco School and graduated from The Dalles High School. It was there she met her future husband, Dale Laughlin.
They eloped in 1932, and lived in The Dalles. Virgina worked at The Dalles General Hospital as a book-keeper, and her husband worked for the Docherty Furniture Co. laying linoleum. After several years, they moved to Wasco to be near her family, and opened Dale's Clothing.
Her uncle, George Potter, was closing the Klondike Store, so display counters and merchandise were moved to the Wasco store. Dale's Clothing was in business for several decades. It was a pleasure and a challenge to them both.
They survived both the fire that burned the Wasco Hotel to the ground in the 1950's and the 1964 flood, with the help of townspeople who quickly moved the store merchandise to safety. Virginia's family was musical. Her mother played the piano for square-dances in the large space above the General Store in Klondike, and her father was the caller. Virginia herself played the piano and the organ. She loved to read, garden and to paint watercolors. She was always supportive of her children, and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We are so grateful to the staff at Aspen Ridge, and to Partners in Care Home Health and Hospice in Bend for their loving patience and incredible care.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Laughlin and Gingir Hakala; grandchildren, Heidi Patterson (Scot), Don Hakala (Christy) and Andy Hakala (Michelle); great-grandchildren, Natalie, Nathan, Ben, Riley, Ethan and Austin; her sister, Eulalie Welk; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in 1982; her brothers, Jerrold and Kenneth Morehouse; and son-in-law, Don Hakala.
A service will be held in Wasco at the Methodist Church at 11:00am on Friday Nov., 14th, 2014.
