Modena Mabel (Downing) Carleton passed away peacefully in her home August 29th with her family by her side.
Modena was born March 24th, 1930 at home on her family ranch in Lyons, Oregon to Orville and Mabel Downing. She was the youngest of 3 children. Modena graduated from Mill City High School in 1947 and was married to the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Carleton in September. Modena and Bob moved to The Dalles in 1957 and were married 53 years before Bob’s passing in February of 2001.
Together, they raised their four children, Larry, Carolyn, Cathy and Barbara, who were active in sports for District 9. Modena and Bob loved sports and were charter members of the Wahtonka Booster Club. They received a lifetime pass to the District 9 sporting events. Modena enjoyed going to many games well after all her children had graduated.
Modena worked for The Dalles Post Office and was the receptionist at the Columbia Veterinary Hospital until retirement.
Modena was an exemplary mother and grandmother. Family was the joy of her life, and she often would say that she felt “like she was dreaming” when the family was together. She followed all their activities, graduations, weddings, births and traveled to see them several times a year. She truly treasured every moment spent with her family and was very proud of all her children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandsons.
Being active was very important to Modena. She was a member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed her women’s Bible study group. Playing pinochle was another passion, as well as her group of friends who had dinner monthly to celebrate their birthdays.
Modena will be remembered as a positive, giving and always happy person. She was a dedicated friend to many and made “random acts of kindness” her lifestyle before it was a popular thing to do. She was much loved and is deeply missed.
She is survived by her children Larry Robert and Meriko Carleton of The Dalles, OR; Carolyn Modena and Bill Luettgerodt of Lake Oswego, OR; Catherine Marie and Keith Pridie of Queen Creek, AZ; and Barbara Anne Carleton and her companion Jim Thompson of Portland, OR; 10 grandchildren, Allison Modena and Kevin Edwards of Incline Village, NV; Jonathan Richard Pridie of Gilbert, AZ; Mark Robert and Lyndsy Listenberger of Waterloo, NE; Molly Kathryn Luettgerodt of Lake Oswego, OR; Jason Orville and Bianca Pridie of Gilbert AZ; and Kimberly Modena and CJ Svela of Lake Oswego, OR; and great grandchildren Carson Jase Pridie, Cade Robert and Brock Taylor Listenberger, Atticus Joseph and Asher Carleton Edwards, Knox Cruz and Kash Jay Pridie; her brother Duane Downing of Walla Walla, WA and her sister Juanita Brown of Springfield, OR.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. A reception to follow at the Cherry Park Grange.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Hospice or The Dalles Senior Center.
