Marie Akita, a longtime resident of Dallesport, Wa., passed away quietly on September 29, 2014 at Oregon Health Science University Hospital in Portland, Ore. after a brief illness. She was the seventh of eight children of Choshiro and Kumano Toda.
She was 89 years young and is survived by her husband, Saburo Akita; her twin sister Mary Imai, Hood River, Ore.; her five children James Akita, Dallesport, Wa.; Raymond Akita (Vicky) Richland, Wa.; Nancy Finch (Daryl), Auburn, Wa.; Byron Akita (Merrie), The Dalles, Ore.; and Jane Breslow (Steve), Hillsboro, Ore.; her grandchildren Ken, Daniel, Tim, Kimberly, Cavan, Adrienne and Chance; her great-grandchildren Kara, Justin and Kylie; and many nephews and nieces.
She was born in The Dalles, Ore. and attended The Dalles High School. During WWII, she and her family were relocated to a Federal Internment Camp for Japanese Americans at Tule Lake, California.
She continued her education in the camp and graduated from Tri-State High School. Soon after graduation, she traveled to Clinton, Iowa to attend nursing school where she graduated as a registered nurse.
She married Saburo Akita on September 25, 1948. The couple lived in the Portland area for a few years before returning to Saburo’s family farm in Dallesport.
She worked for many years as a registered nurse at The Dalles General Hospital (now Mid-Columbia Medical Center) before spending the last 50 years working on their produce farm and cherry orchard in Dallesport.
Marie loved to read, especially about history and archaeology. She always owned a dog or cat and her house became the neighborhood food source for both domestic and wild animals. She was small in stature, but large in life.
She was filled with energy and was “always on the go.” She was generous with her time and resources and her home was often used for large family gatherings. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents Choshiro and Kumano Toda; her brothers Frank Toda, Tom Toda, and Harry Toda; and her sisters Tazuko Toda, Susie Ogawa and Lena Hoffman.
A Celebration of Life will take place on October 25, 2014 beginning at 12:00 noon at The Civic Auditorium, 323 East 4th Street, The Dalles, Ore.
Friends and family are invited to write down a memory or story about Marie’s life and bring it with them to the celebration to add to a Memory Book.
