James O. Benton passed away September 6, 2014 at his home in Springfield, OR.
He was born on April 2, 1928 in Council Bluffs, IA to Leonard and Alice (Davisson) Benton.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dolores (McAlpine); his son, Steve, and partner, Diane, of Cottage Grove; his grandson, Ryan, wife, Michelle, and great-grandson, Robert, of Portland; sister, Jean Harmon, of Los Angeles; sister-in-law, Judy McAlpine, of Springfield; daughter-in-law, Linda, of Portland; nephews, Dennis, Leonard, and Jim Harmon, of Los Angeles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son, Ron Benton.
Jim grew up and graduated from high school in Los Angeles, CA. He joined the Army in 1950. He served in the 45th Division, 180th Infantry in Japan and Korea.
In 1952, he moved to Wamic, OR, where he worked for Cody Logging and Farm Work. He then moved to The Dalles, where he entered a plumber’s apprenticeship and worked in the trade for over 50 years.
He retired in 1990, spending many winters in Arizona and traveling within the US and Canada with his and his wife’s friends, the Hackets. In 2005, Jim and Dolores moved to Dexter, and then to Springfield, giving up their RV to buy a home.
Jim will be remembered for his friendly nature and big smile. He is loved by many and will be missed.
