Mary Faye Downey was born in Joplin, Mo., on June 25, 1924, the second child of Walter and Nettie Miller. She spent her childhood years in Arizona before moving to Grandview, Wash., with her mother and two sisters, Vesta Lee Dunn and Eula Mae Downey. She married the love of her life, Lester A. Downey, in Prosser, Wash., on July 9, 1940. Les was a builder which made it necessary for them to move around a lot until they settled in The Dalles, Ore., in 1952. It was always her priority to create a loving comfortable home for her family. They worked together as a team to build Les’ business, and then to build their business. Downey Carpets and Furniture was founded in 1968 in a small shop and it continued to grow for the next three years when they purchased the two buildings where Downey La-Z-Boy Gallery now stand. This business is now owned by their daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ron Vergeer. Her main focus was always the love of her family and her “adopted family” and friends.
She was a volunteer for many community activities and her door was always open to those in need. After retirement, they lived in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and made many new and dear friends before coming ”home” to The Dalles. Faye was the tender, loving ‘care giver’ for Les, and then moved to the Springs at Mill Creek. A special thank you to the staff there.
