Jan Copeland, a long-time resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away June 4, 2015 while receiving hospice care. She was born in Crawfordsville, Ind., April 30, 1950 the oldest of three children to James and Betty (Owens) Proffitt. She grew up in Crawfordsville, Ind., relocating to Bend, Ore., and then moving to The Dalles with husband Jack Copeland. She attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and Western New Mexico University in Silver City, N.M.
Jan loved music, was affiliated with the Western New Mexico Department of Music, played a variety of stringed instruments, and for decades taught music to students of all ages. She was a local artist and displayed her sketches and paintings at a number of business locations throughout The Dalles. She was an avid reader, a wonderful cook and a keen game-board player.
She is survived by husband Jack of The Dalles, step-daughter Venina Neely and grandchildren Eddie and Kenny of La Grande, Ore., mother Betty Proffitt of The Dalles, brother Jeff Proffitt and wife Donna of Ridgway, Colo., sister Julie Jones and husband Jon R. of New Richmond, Ind., her little dog “Lucy,” numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and close friends. Internment services will be held at a later date.
