Our mother, Dee DeMoss (93) died on March 9, 2015 in The Dalles, Oregon. Dee was born in 1921 to Thomas and Agnes Simonson of Finley, North Dakota. She grew up in Finley and attended Valley City State Teachers College, graduating in 1941.
Dee met Ordie Hoye while teaching in Milnor, N.D. Ordie served in the US Navy during WWII and they married in 1943 while Ordie was in port. After Ordie completed his military service, they moved to Gervais, OR. Ordie taught at Gervais High School and Dee was a homemaker raising their two daughters Carol and Connie. She was an accomplished cook and baker of pies and desserts.
The family moved to Moro in 1959, staying until 1965 when Dee and Ordie divorced. Dee enrolled at Oregon College of Education (WOU) in Monmouth, in September of 1965. Although she was anxious about being a college student in her forties, she proved to be a dedicated student. She excelled, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1967.
In 1972, Dee married Don DeMoss. They lived in Moro where Dee taught at Moro Grade School and later at South Sherman Elementary. She retired from teaching in 1983.
Dee enjoyed her grandchildren, Mark, Michelle and Susan. She made wonderful lifelong friends in Gervais, Moro and Monmouth. Travels to the Oregon coast, Hawaii, Europe and her home state of North Dakota were memorable events in her life.
She is survived by her daughters Carol (Paul) Sather and Connie (Fred) Erickson, her grandchildren, Mark Sather, Michelle Milner and Susan Frink. She had five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Moro Presbyterian Church in Moro on Saturday, March 28th at 11:00 am.
Memorial contributions can be made to Moro Presbyterian Church, Sherman County Historical Museum or a charity of choice.
