Junior Leslie (Les) Mead, 84, La Grande, Ore., (formerly of Dufur) passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at a local care facility in La Grande, Ore. A celebration of Les’ life will be held Friday, May 22, 2015 at 3 pm, at the Shilo Inn, 3223 Bret Clodfelter Way, The Dalles, Oregon.
Les was born October 6, 1930 in Dufur, Ore., to Stewart Grant Mead and Beulah Mae (Stuart) Mead. He is survived by 3 daughters: Mickie Irene Grant, Sandy Kay Mead, and Kathleen Leslie Mead-Greenough; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Les graduated from Dufur High School where he lettered in basketball and football. He was involved in 4-H and a riding club. Sports were always a big part of his life, he enjoyed all sports. In his younger years he refereed basketball around the Dalles area. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and bird watching.
During his career years, Les worked for Shell Oil Company in The Dalles, Ore. He later moved to La Grande, Ore., and worked for Eveson, Snyder, and Lincoln as an accountant until his retirement. After retirement, he moved back to Dufur, Ore., where he served as Mayor for two terms.
