Our much loved mother and grandmother, Joyce Lee Erikson, passed away on November 4, 2015, at the age of 85. A long-time resident of The Dalles, Joyce was born on December 20, 1929 in Hillsboro, Ore. She was the only child of George J. and Ema (Barta) Feldman. Joyce grew up in Forest Grove, Ore., where she was valedictorian of her high school class. She continued her education at Oregon State University and married Harold Erikson in 1948.
Joyce and Harold and their three sons moved to The Dalles, Ore., in 1964 where she began her career with School District 12 at Colonel Wright School. Joyce was employed at Colonel Wright as a playground aide, librarian, and school secretary for 28 years until her retirement in 1992.
Joyce always found great pleasure in being with children. She was a good friend and confidant to many Colonel Wright students through the years. She was never happier than being with her boys and friends when camping, boating, and water skiing. In later years she had her granddaughters to enjoy. Along with the granddaughters came adventures to the beach, shopping trips to Portland, and after their 14th birthday, a “Cruise with Grandma.” Those were blessed times for both Joyce and the girls. Her family will always remember her generosity.
After retirement, Joyce became involved with volunteer activities. She was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, School District 12, The Dalles Art Center, and for many years the Maryhill Museum of Art. Joyce was a member of Chapter Q PEO Sisterhood.
Joyce is survived by her three sons and their families: David Erikson of Portland; Douglas Erikson, his wife Susan, and daughter Ema of The Dalles; and Daniel Erikson, his wife Janet, and their daughters Elizabeth, Ellen, and Zoe of Billings, Mont.
Private cremation has taken place, with Spencer, Libby, and Powell in charge of arrangements. A reception honoring Joyce’s life will be held on Sunday November 8, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in the Springs Room at The Springs at Mill Creek, address 1201 West 10th St, The Dalles.
Memorials may be made to the The Dalles High School Scholarship Fund or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Christina Denley for the devoted attention she gave Joyce, as well as the staff at The Springs at Mill Creek for their care and kindness.
