Delno Dee Hoptowit (72) of Mabton, Wash., passed away peacefully at Legacy Hospice Hopewell House with his family by his side on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. He was born in Yakima on May 24, 1943 to Leo and Betty (Brewer) Hoptowit. He was raised and educated in the lower valley and graduated from Granger High School.
Delno was a commercial fisherman all his life in Alaska, the coast and was a treaty tribal fisherman on the Columbia River. In 1966 he married Pamela Goudy in Stevenson, Wash. They later divorced but remained lifetime friends and he remained very active on both sides of the family. He would spend holidays and family gatherings at the Wheelers home in White Swan. He lived life as he wished as an avid duck, deer and elk hunter, and fly fisherman. Delno enjoyed family functions, attending sporting events, telling stories and teaching his grandchildren how to become providers for their families.
Delno always put his family first. He attended the Satus Christian Mission Church and was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation.
Delno is survived by his children, Rianna Hoptowit of White Swan, Kenny (Vanessa) Hoptowit of Goldendale and Betty Hoptowit of The Dalles, Ore.; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd (Paula) Commander of Pendleton, Ore.; two sisters, Serena (Robert) McPherson of Stanfield, Ore., and Sophie Hoptowit of Spokane; a legion of loving nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Dr. Bill.
Delno was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Duane Hoptowit; his granddaughter, Angel Sky Hoptowit and his longtime friend, Johnny Meyers.
Dressing services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday October 8, 2015 at Colonial Funeral Home with overnight services following at the Toppenish Creek Longhouse in White Swan.
Funeral Services will be held at sunrise Friday at the longhouse with burial following at the Goudy-Umtuch Cemetery south of Toppenish. Friends can send condolences at www.toppenishfunerals.com. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
