Vern Scott Henkle was born to Mark and Florence Henkle on the McCoy farm in Moro, Ore., on February 9, 1930. He passed away on Monday October 12, 2015, in The Dalles, Ore. The oldest of seven children, from an early age he cared for his younger siblings and assisted his dad on the farm. Vern was very active in 4-H, leading a club in the Columbia District. In his later years, he actively participated in the Shrine club and Masonic Lodge. As an active member of First Christian Church, he served in several leadership roles such as chairman of the congregation and deacon. Vern loved singing in the choir and looked forward to participating in the Christmas cantata. For 20 years he participated in the yearly Easter community event, the Last Days of Jesus. He is survived by his wife, Donna Henkle, three children: DuAnn (Gregg) Kenney and their children Evan and Krista, Cheryl (Hoi) Ton, and Mark (Esther) Henkle and their children Alex and Nathan. He is also survived by his six younger siblings and their families.
A memorial service in honor of his legacy will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, The Dalles, Ore.
Donations may be made in Vern Henkle's name to the Shrine Hospital in Portland, Ore.
