Calvin T. Gump passed away on September 24, 2015. Calvin was born at home on October 4, 1924 near Peoria, Ore., to Laura Elsie Van Meter Gump and Edward Gump.
Following high school, WWII was in progress and Calvin volunteered for the Navy. He was stationed in Hawaii. After the war he returned to the Hood River area and married his high school sweetheart, Margret Zimmerman, of Hood River. They were blessed with 2 children, Andrew and Rebecca.
In 1955 the family moved to St. Helens so Calvin could pursue his career with Crown Zellerbach/Boise Cascade in the pulp and paper industry. Calvin and Margret enjoyed sharing their lives together whether traveling, fishing, hunting, rock hounding or gardening. It was Calvin's passion for gardening that helped them decide to move back to the Gorge after retirement; settling in The Dalles where the sunny location afforded a favorable climate for gardening. Calvin was an avid and gifted organic gardener. He was well known for his love of kiwis and developed a methodology for successfully propagating them in the local climate. He will be deeply missed.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margret Gump; daughter Rebecca Gayken of Stevenson; son Andrew Gump of Junction City, Kan.; brothers Chester Gump and James "Jim" Gump; and a number of nieces and nephews in both Oregon and Washington.
