Herman ‘Herm’ Ziegler, Jr., 89, a resident of The Dalles, Oregon died Sunday, August 30, 2015.
Herman was born March 25, 1926 in The Dalles, Ore., to Herman and Beryl (Eslinger) Ziegler. He was raised and educated in Grass Valley, Ore., graduating from Grass Valley High School in 1944. During World War II he served as an Army Medic in Hawaii. On March 21, 1951 he and Elizabeth Ann Smethurst were married in Lexington, Ore. Herman attended Eastern Oregon University, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in 1951 and a Master’s degree in 1955.
Herman was an Elementary School Principal for thirty years. He was Principal of Dry Hollow Elementary School for twenty-six years. He drove patients to and from Portland for cancer treatments and volunteered for twenty-five years on behalf of foster children as a board member and chairman of the Citizen’s Review Board.
He is survived by his son Bill Ziegler of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Pam Goldsberry and her husband John of The Dalles, Ore.; brother Bob Ziegler of Hermitage, Tenn.; and grandchildren Billy Goldsberry of Clackamas, Ore.; Haylee Goldsberry of Corvallis, Ore.; and Murphy Goldsberry of The Dalles, Ore.
Services will be held Friday, September 4, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Flagstone Senior Living.
Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
