Carey Thomas Melcher, a long time resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away on September 4, 2015 at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.
Carey was born on March 17, 1944 in Vanport, Ore., to Virgil and Clara (Ernest) Melcher. He mainly grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Carey graduated from Quincy High School and attended Lower Columbia Basin College. He enlisted in the United States Army for twenty-one years as a CI agent. While in the Army, he served in the Vietnam War and achieved the rank of Sergeant Major before his honorable discharge in 1986.
He married Ann Milner on October 23, 1971 in Wasco, Ore. After agents training, they enjoyed assignments in Okinawa, Japan; Belgium, Korea and Washington D.C. In 1988, he returned to the Pacific Northwest. He had many varied interests throughout his life including teaching English as a second language, volunteering at the Oregon Veteran's Home, serving on several committees for St. Peter's Catholic Church and as a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Ann of The Dalles, daughter Sonya Tinnirello and husband Guy of Conroe, Texas, daughter Annette Melcher of Brooklyn, N.Y., and granddaughter Sarah Melcher of Conroe, Texas.
Services will be held on September 15, 2015 at St. Peter's Church celebrated by Father Joseph Levine. The Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. and funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Veteran's Foundation, Oregon Health & Science University Foundation or a charity of your choosing.
