Marian Carol Rohde passed away unexpectedly at her home in The Dalles, Ore., on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the age of 83.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Louise Wharton, her husband, Donald James Rohde and her beloved cat, Lily. She is survived by daughter Diane (Wayne) of Beaverton, Ore.; son Steven (Bradlee) of Montréal, Québec; daughter Carolyn of The Dalles, Ore.; two grandchildren, Liesel (Rob) and Justin (Chantale) and two great grandchildren, Maddox and Rowan.
Marian was born in Seattle on March 6, 1933 and grew up in Portland, graduating from Grant High School in 1949. She attended Oregon State College where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and where she met her husband, Don. They married in 1952 and moved to The Dalles in 1959.
Marian and Don were members of Zion Lutheran Church, the Wasco County Historical Round Table and the La Wonick Dance Club.
Gardening was her passion. She was an enthusiastic member of the Wasco County Master Gardener Program, graduating in the first class in 1989.
She exhibited her garden on the Master Gardener garden tour, led the 4th grade Seeds and Soils program for many years and was always a friendly face at plant clinics and many Master Gardener events. Her garden was a work of art and she could tell you the latin names of all her plants.
In addition to gardening, Marian’s hobbies ranged from stained glass to tole painting to learning French. Marian and Don took a trip to France where a highlight was a trip to Monet’s garden. She was a member of the Weed Beaters Garden Club and Chapter BF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and she volunteered for the Wasco County Election Board.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and coterie.
A private graveside service was held on Wednesday, March 30. A celebration of Marian’s life will be held in The Dalles on May 21 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center.
