Dorothy Ann Schultz died on July 15, 2016 at OHSU after a long illness. She was born in The Dalles, April 20, 1941, the only child of Glen Don and Helen Dorothy (DeHaven) Schultz. She was the third generation to attend Joseph G. Wilson Elementary School and was a graduate of The Dalles High School Class of 1959. She attended Eastern Oregon College in LaGrande, Ore., Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., and Mt. Hood Community College, in Gresham, Ore. She held the GRI (Graduate Realtor’s Institute) degree.
In 1961 she married Gerald Wayne Willits of The Dalles. They had one son, Donald Wayne Willits. The marriage ended in divorce in the mid-1980s. In in 2011 Dorothy married Russell William Betschart. They had enjoyed many years traveling throughout the United States, long road trips provided the opportunity to see the country at their leisure. Cruising to Alaska became an annual event, often taking friends with them to enjoy the amazing vistas the state provided.
Dorothy worked in the clerical/secretarial field for several years, then began a long and successful career in real estate. She eventually went to work in the newspaper field, and began a life long passion of writing and of working in journalism.
In 1990 she returned to her hometown of The Dalles where she continued to work in the publishing business.
Through the years her articles appeared in various publications being written under several different names for her various columns. Most notable was an eight year run of “Night Writer” by Deanne DeHaven. In addition “Around Town” by Glenna Lyons was a column featuring business news. She also wrote, under her own name, numerous feature articles and essays about the areas in which she lived.
Through the years Dorothy began working with a variety of service organizations as a volunteer and coordinator. During these years she received numerous awards and certificates of recognition on the local, state and regional level. She was named Beta Sigma Woman of the Year several times in The Dalles and Eugene plus she was runner up Oregon State Woman of the year in 1971. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Mid-Columbia Veterans’ Memorial Committee at the time of her death. Through the years she helped support many charities including Oregon Public Broadcasting, and Disabled American Veterans. During recent years Dorothy enjoyed making gift baskets that were raffled off with proceeds going to Meals on Wheels. She also recently completed a fundraising campaign to buy round tables for the senior center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and her favorite aunt and uncle, George and Velma Moon, formerly of The Dalles. She is survived by her husband Russ Betschart, son Donald Wayne Willits his wife Daisy and granddaughters Emily and Rose of Bellevue, Wash., four cousins and their families and many longtime friends.
Graveside Celebration of Life will be held at the Odd Fellows Cemetary at 9 am Saturday, July 30, 2016 with reception following at the Fireside Room of The Civic at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
