Nancy Ann Nyberg-Maurer was born on January 11, 1942 to Arthur and Maye Nyberg in Pelican Rapids, Minn. Although the family moved around often during her young life, Nancy spent most of her formative years growing up in The Dalles Oregon.
Nancy attended The Dalles High School and shared her beautiful singing voice as part of the school choir and on the local radio. Nancy lived with the Easley family in her senior year at high school and worked for The Dalles Hospital.
After high school, Nancy ventured to the big city of Portland, Ore., lived with her best friends Linda Easley and Suzanne Cruse while attending Portland State University. Nancy met and danced with William (Bill) Maurer for the first time at a local dance. He was a native Portlander and PSU student as well.
They were married August 23, 1963 in Portland, Ore. Nancy and Bill had five children between 1964 and 1977, including a set of twins. Nancy worked various jobs in office administration including the PSU research department, OLCC and multiple lumber companies until her youngest daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1981.
Nancy and Bill were committed to raising all of their children in the church. Nancy was a long time member of Lincoln Street Baptist Church and then Flavel Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed her part in developing and caring for the flower gardens that adorned Flavel Street Baptist Church.
Her home was most important to her and she shared her love of her home with others by hosting many events. Holidays, birthdays and jam sessions were just a few of the many festivities that might be held at this iconic home. There always seemed to be an open door policy and this home was of highest importance to many.
Above all Nancy was a vigilant mother and caretaker to family. She also provided care to numerous less fortunate friends and community members over the years in deeds and donations.
Nancy is survived by daughters and sons Heather Maurer of Sweet Home, Ore., Dawn Haskett of Boring, Ore., Adam Maurer of Canby, Ore., and Matthew Maurer of Redmond, Ore., sister Bonnie Mills of Seattle, Wash., and brother Mickey Ragan of Vancouver, Wash., 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter MonElisa Maurer, husband William R. Maurer and brothers Laurence Nyberg and Donald Nyberg.
