Iris Martin, 93, a longtime resident of The Dalles, Ore., since 1950, passed away on June 17, 2016 from heart failure.
Iris Baker was born August 13, 1923 in Browns Valley, Minn., the youngest of four children (James, Helen, Ruth, Iris) to John H. Baker and Lena Flesch Baker. John's family came from Germany, and Lena's family came from Norway.
Iris married Leo E. Kane in 1941 in South Dakota. They had two children - John “Jack” Kane of Palm Desert, Calif., and James “Jay” Kane of The Dalles, Ore.
Leo and Iris owned and operated restaurants in Minnesota and South Dakota, before moving to The Dalles, in 1950. Iris worked for J.C. Penny for a number of years after moving to The Dalles. Leo managed The Dalles Country Club and then was General Manager of the local Elks Club before buying the Liberty Club on 2nd Street. Following that venture, they purchased the Hilo Club and Bank Hotel businesses. Later, they purchased the Shamrock and had a very successful business for many years. They ran that operation together until Leo passed away after a very long challenge with cancer in 1968. Following his death, Iris ran the Shamrock until eventually selling the business to her son, Jay Kane.
Iris marred Don Martin in 1972, and together they purchased the Wagon, which they owned until 2008. Don passed away in 2008. Iris remained at their ranch home in the hills overlooking The Dalles General Hospital for a few years and then moved into town and a smaller home.
Iris Martin is survived by her sons, Jack and Jay, her four grandchildren, Candis, Mark, Mike, Steve, and her five great-grandchildren, Logan, Jonah, Stryder, Calvin, and Harper.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Meals on Wheels.
