Frank George Hipsley, of Tygh Valley and most recently The Dalles, Ore., passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016. Frank was born in Monticello, Minn., on June 16, 1933 to William and Helen Hipsley. Frank was the youngest of five children and shortly after his birth, his father moved their family to California. They settled in Encinitas, Calif., where Frank grew up and went to school. Frank worked at Moonlight beach in Encinitas for his father who managed the beach, rented surf riders, and ran a youth center there. Frank met the love of his life, Barbara Fuhrmann there at a beach party. They had a short courtship and were married. During this time, Frank was attending Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., where he received his associates degree. After graduation, he started working for Pacific Telephone which later became AT&T, whom he retired from after 29 years. Frank and Barbara made their home in Cardiff and raised three children, Tracey, William (Bill), and Tania. In 1989, Frank and Barbara followed their daughter Tracey up to Oregon. They settled on a ranch in Tygh Valley where they raised cattle. They loved this new life and were the happiest they ever were there. Frank was also active in the Volunteer Fire Department. Barbara passed away unexpectedly due to cancer. Frank mourned Barbara for 3 years until one day he met a local woman by the name of Janet Thomas at the Tygh Valley Potlatch. They were married and lived happily for 10 years in Tygh Valley. After Janet’s death, Frank continued to live in Tygh Valley until recently when he moved into The Dalles to live with his daughter Tracey.
Frank always enjoyed the outdoors. In his earlier years, he spent hours on the beach with his family swimming in the ocean and hunting for sea shells. Frank took his family on frequent camping and fishing trips throughout California, Arizona, Idaho, Mexico and Hawaii. He was a proud member of the Elks Club which he was a lifetime member of 56 years. During his marriage to Janet, they were active in the Catholic Church, Tygh Valley Potlatch and were part of the initial group who fundraised and organized to have the Canyon Rim Assisted Living built.
Frank was preceded in death by his wives: Barbara and Janet, his son Bill, his parents, a brother and 3 sisters. He is survived by daughters Tracey Arrendale of The Dalles and Tania Hipsley of Tygh Valley.
He had five grandchildren Brandon and his wife Stephanie Sabetti, Oregon City, Ore.; Blake Sabetti, Calif., Gordon (Bubba) Arrendale, The Dalles, Ore.; Chloe Hipsley-Northrup, Tygh Valley, Ore.; William Valenti, Fla., and 3 great-grandchildren Brayden, Landon and MacKenna Sabetti all of Oregon City, Ore. Frank had numerous nieces and nephews. With his marriage to Janet Thomas, he had a large extended family of step-children and grandchildren.
A celebration of Frank’s life will be held at the Tygh Valley Community Center on Saturday, July 2, 2016. Frank’s family would like for you all to come and share your memories of him and his life in Tygh Valley.
