Mary Ellen Hattenhauer was born in Grass Valley, Ore., on October 20, 1923 to Elwood and Ida (Harden) Ginn. The Ginn family moved to The Dalles in 1924 when Elwood accepted a job with the city. Mary graduated from The Dalles High School in 1941 and soon met Roy Hattenhauer. They were married on October 19, 1947. A long-time resident of Pendleton, Mary moved to Beaverton to be closer to her family in 2010. She died on May 14, 2016 at the Raleigh Hills Nursing Home. Roy passed on June 29, 1998 in Pendleton.
The Hattenhauer family moved to Pendleton, Ore., in 1955 when Roy took a job as superintendent of Helix Milling Company in Helix, Ore. With their two boys in school, Mary returned to the working world. She worked at Hamley’s, Tullis Office Supply, Winter Motors and finally retired in 1968 from the Oregon Hospital and Training Center. Mary was a tireless worker and, upon her retirement, she went to work at what was then the family business of operating Hatt’s Elkhorn Tavern, The Smoke Shop and Packard in Pendleton, Ore. While Mary loved to work she demanded that her two boys perform well in school. She always told them that an education was a great way to get ahead in life. In hindsight, she would be correct and she was proud that her boys were very successful in pursuing an education and life.
When Mary was younger she was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing and swimming at the Pendleton County Club. Mary loved to attend family athletic events, concerts and recitals. However, all who know Mary may well recall her enjoyment of wearing fine clothes and always making a stylish presentation.
Mary Hattenhauer is survived by her son Richard Hattenhauer and his wife Janice of Beaverton, Ore., her son David Hattenhauer of Eugene, Ore., and her stepson Dr. Mark Hattenhauer and his wife Chris of Lake Oswego, Ore. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her brother Walter Ginn, her sister Roberta Watson, and her parents.
In lieu of a service, memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Relief Nursery in Pendleton, Ore.
