Elizabeth "Betty" E. Ricks Serna was born in Denver, Colo., on October 24, 1918 and died on November 5, 2016 at her home in The Dalles, Ore. Betty was born to Arthur B. and Ruth (Shaw) Robinson. She was raised by a very much loved stepmother Ethel after the death of mother Ruth at age 3.
Betty grew up in Denver, graduated from East High School and attended Colorado Women's College. She married Sidney B. Ricks, on April 9, 1939. She worked at secretarial jobs until they moved to ranches at Tabernash and Grand Lake, Colo. They later lived in Arizona, South Dakota and Montana before moving to The Dalles in 1958.
Diana Louise and Kenneth Sidney Ricks were Sidney and Betty's only children. Sid passed away in The Dalles in Feb. 1973. Betty married Jack M. Serna in Sept. 1978. Jack passed away in June 1996.
Betty enjoyed various crafts, cooking, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and crocheting. She volunteered in several organizations, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for over 50 years, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles for 57 years. Before her retirement, she worked for many years in secretarial and office management positions.
Betty was predeceased by Sidney and Jack, her parents, stepmother Ethel and brother Arthur. She is survived by daughter Diana and husband Mark Weston, son Kenneth Ricks, grandsons Kyle and Dwayne Weston (Angie), great-grandchildren Sydney and Keegan Weston, brother John Robinson, brother-in-law Fred Ricks, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12, 2016 at Spencer Libby & Powell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Betty requested that donations be sent to Heart of Hospice, 2621 Wasco St., Hood River, OR 97031.
