Dean Alfred Brege

Rufus, Oregon

August 10, 1948 - October 17, 2016

Dean Alfred Brege, 68, of Rufus, Ore., passed away at Legacy Emanuel hospital. He was born in Alpena, Mich., on August 10, 1948. Dean attended school in Belknap Township’s St. Michael’s Lutheran School, and graduated from Rogers City High School in 1966. After serving in the Army in 1972 and 1973, he returned to college and received his Master’s degree in Fish Biology. He moved to Rufus in 1976 to work for the Nation Marine Fisheries and met his future wife Linda Byrd.

Linda Marie Brege (Byrd), 69, of Rufus, Ore., passed away at her home, after a battle with cancer. She was born in The Dalles, Ore., on Feb. 17, 1947. She was the eldest daughter of Robert W. and Ina M. Byrd of Rufus.

Linda attended school in Rufus, and graduated from Sherman High School in 1965. She went on to college at Western Oregon State College (WOSU now) and received her Master’s degree in education. While at Western Oregon she played basketball. She taught school in the Portland area and then got the opportunity to go to Europe to teach on a military base for two years. On returning home she taught in the Sherman County school district where she was also a track and volleyball coach. Shortly after returning home from teaching in Europe she met and married Dean Brege.

Dean & Linda (Byrd) Brege were married in 1978, and had two daughters Heidi and Nichole. During their lifetime in Rufus they both volunteered for the Rufus Fire and Ambulance for many years. Dean served on the Rufus City Council and the school boards. Linda served on many local boards and committees as well. Dean was an avid hunter, and for 39 years taught Hunters Education for the State of Oregon. Dean and Linda both enjoyed the outdoors and most especially enjoyed their time with their family and friends.

The couple is survived by their daughters: Heidi (Brege) Allen and husband Alfonso, and Nichole (Brege) Banttari and husband Ed, four grandchildren: Lotus, Ina, Eli, and Ivan. They are also survived by numerous family members and friends who dearly loved them.

A celebration of life will be held November 19, 2016 in Rufus, Ore., at Bob’s Texas T-bone’s banquet room from 1 - 4 p.m.
