Larry Browning Shimp, 80, a resident of The Dalles, OR for 74 years, passed away at the local Oregon Veterans Home on October 28, 2016 with family and friends by his side.

Larry was born October 1, 1936, in Lebbon, Kansas, the second of three children, to Harold Shimp and Ethel (Mulkey) Shimp. In 1942, at the age of 6, Larry's family moved to The Dalles, OR. Where he
finished out his schooling and made it home for his family.

Larry married the love of his life Pauline "Pudge" Shefstad on Sept. 3, 1959, in The Dalles, OR. Larry worked for local businesses growing up before enlisting in the Air Force in 1954. Larry was in the Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, as an Air Traffic Controller. Larry worked for H.S. Smith in sales and as a route driver as well as a truck driver for another local business until going to work for Union Pacific Railroad as a break man until a serious railroad accident in 1969. After years of rehabilitation, Larry went to work for Albert Bernert Towing, now known as Bernert Barge Lines, as a welder and later becoming a deckhand on the tugboats. With his passion to pilot the Columbia River, he pursued his dream by becoming a Tugboat Captain with Bernert Barge Lines. Larry continued working for different tugboat company’s until retiring from Tidewater as a Tugboat Captain.

Larry was an active member of The Eagles Lodge, The American Legion and belonged to several different Unions. He was also a Boy Scout Leader for many years where he received the Order of the Arrow award; Larry was such a great influence for many young men in the Boy Scouts that even some of them became Boy Scout leaders themselves. Larry and Pauline “Pudge” enjoyed all of their time together including going to yard sales and their annual trips to Mazatlán, Mexico. Larry enjoyed cooking for burger madness at the Eagles Lodge and loved baking during the holidays, he was known as “Betty Crocker”. Larry also loved fishing, hunting, jet boating on the Deschutes River; he enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars and was an avid sports fan (Football, Baseball, Basketball & NASCAR.) "Go Blazers".

Larry is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Jeanene and Max Sigl, Hood River, OR; Vonnie Long, Granbury, TX; his son L. Todd Shimp and his wife Nancy, The Dalles, OR; daughter-in-law Diane Wanous, The Dalles, OR; his grandchildren Amanda, Katelyn, Tharen, Joshua, Corey, Cassandra, Kurtis, Cesilee & Tyson. His sister Connie and Husband Larry, CA; Numerous Great Grand Children, nieces, nephews, his best buddy Judy Davis and many extended family and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife Pauline "Pudge" Shimp in 2003, his parents Harold & Ethel Shimp, his sister Carol Sue Sullivan, his brother-in-law Myron Shefstad and his son-in-law Mickey Long.

Memorial services will be held at Spencer Libby and Powell Funeral home at 1 p.m. on Saturday
December 3, 2016 with Pastor David Clear officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Winquatt Crematory.

Celebrations of Life to follow at the Eagles Lodge.
