Betty passed away March 10, 2017, peacefully in her home with her children close by her side. Betty was born in The Dalles, Ore., and spent all her life there. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1951. She was preceded in death by husband Royce, who passed away in 2001. They were married for over 50 years.
She has two living children: son Bill and wife; daughter, Linda who resides in The Dalles; and son Chuck who preceded her in death. Betty had seven grandchildren and three great-grand children.
One of the biggest joys in her life was her career with Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center in The Dalles. She returned as a volunteer after retirement. She began volunteering for the Salvation Army in the early 1970's, serving food to the elderly, then called the Wasco Meals on Wheels program. In the late 1970's, she became the manager for the program. The program moved to the Moose Lodge in the late 70's where she improved the program and grew it into what it is today. In the mid 1980's, the city built a Senior Center that houses the Meals on Wheels program to this day. Betty, with her hard work and desire to see the program succeed, put her all into fundraising. She started weekly Bingo games, which continue to bring in needed donations to the center. Betty first retired from Meals on Wheels in 2001, traveled with her husband, but then came back to work in 2002 and again retired in 2009. She continued going to the center to volunteer just about everyday. Betty learned as a staff member the value of volunteers and that they were vital to it's survival. The family honors those of you that have worked with the program as volunteers. We invite any that would consider volunteering in the future a treasured part of her legacy.
She loved helping out the seniors and loving on them. There was never a stranger she did not speak a good word to and/or encourage. She was so well thought of that the center named the dining room after her, it is called Betty's Diner.
A Meals on Wheels fundraising lunch in Betty's memory with her favorite menu will be served April 8, at noon at the Senior Center 1112 W. 9th, Street The Dalles, Ore. Minimum donation $3. Celebration of life service will begin at 1 p.m. after lunch, at the same location.
The family also extends grateful thanks to Heart of Hospice for their love and care for Betty and us.
A private burial ceremony will be attended by family only.
