Jerry was born to Veora and Clifford Piland, and older brother, Ken. He spent his elementary school days in Medford, Ore., moving to The Dalles as a seventh grader, where he forged many friendships that lasted his entire life. He played basketball, baseball, and golf in high school, graduating in 1962 and attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., on a baseball scholarship. He received his master's degree in education from Lewis and Clark College. His career as a teacher, principal, and district administrator were mainly in the Evergreen School District in Vancouver, Wash.
Jerry married Kathy in 1967 and they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in November. He is greatly missed by her; son, Cale (Lori); daughter, Amanda (Chris); and grandchildren, Allie, Josh, Harper, and Rylie.
An avid gym user and golfer, his sudden death from a pulmonary embolism on June 7, 2017, was totally unexpected. He would ask us to treasure each day.
