Vernon was born the second of four children to Ralph Vernon Pipes and Henrietta Rebecca (Fry) Pipes in Alhambra, Calif.
He grew up in southern California and enjoyed spending time with his father on many movie sets with Fox and Paramount studios, where his father worked as an electrician.
Vernon served in the United States Navy during World War II. After coming home, he also worked for Fox and Paramount studios, and knew many of the stars of that era.
During that time in 1945, he married Jeanne Wilson and his first son was born. They were divorced a few years later.
In 1951 Vernon married Doris Perry in 1954 his second son was born. He again divorced in 1970.
He married Ada Mae Talley, who passed away in November 2010.
Vernon worked as a truck driver and spent many years up and down the West Coast. He had fond memories of delivering fruit in Oregon and Washington.
He also enjoyed hobbies of trains, automobiles and shortwave radios.
Vernon is survived by his brother, Wayne Pipes and wife Judy of Bend Ore., sons; Richard Lyon and wife Jo of Dufur, Ore.,Vernon “Skip” Pipes and wife Debbie of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
