Marjorie Ann Newbury

The Dalles, Oregon

October 24, 1922 - January 5, 2017

Marjorie was born to Marie and Charles Cummings on the 24th of October, 1922, in Superior, Wisconsin. Her early childhood was spent in Wisc., and when Charles found a job in Spirit Lake, Idaho, his family soon joined him. Marjorie attended school in Spirit Lake. After her graduation, the family moved to Spokane, Wash. Marjorie was employed as an operator for Bell Telephone for several years. In 1959 she married Weldon Newbury. They lived in Spokane, Wash., until Weldon was transferred to Olympia, Wash. When Weldon retired, they moved to Sky Valley, near Desert Hot Springs, Calif. Every summer they would travel to Oregon, to visit family. After Weldon's death, Marjorie continued to live in California. Four years ago, recurring health problems brought her to Oregon to be closer to family. She lived at Cherry Heights Living Center in The Dalles, Ore., until her passing on Jan. 5, 2017.

Marjorie showed pride in her Irish heritage and traveled to Ireland. She would celebrate St. Patrick's Day each year by wearing her special shamrock sweater set. She enjoyed dancing, traveling, Bonesy (her big dog), going to the casinos, and basking in the warmth of the desert sun. Her favorite time of day in the desert was sunset, watching the colors change. Her family was her greatest joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lillian, husband Weldon and step-granddaughter Elizabeth. She is survived by daughter Sharon Aleckson (Arlen) of Lyle, Wash., and son John Aleckson of Washougal, Wash.; step-daughter Peggy Newbury of Tasmania, and her children Vince and Joe Pool, and Kelley (Roger) Brandt of Redmond, Ore., and Lillian's four children.

Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1222 W. 10th, The Dalles, Oregon on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at 11 a.m.
