Melvin John Olmstead, known to everyone as John, passed away at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles, Ore., on Jan. 3, 2017, after a 50-year battle with diabetes and 15 years of dialysis treatment for kidney disease.
He is survived by his 98 year old mother, Kathryn Hackenbruck Olmstead (Jessie’s Flower Shop), The Dalles, Ore.; sisters, Melanie Junker, Palmer, Alaska, Jill Townsend, Canby, Ore., and Kim Olmstead, The Dalles, Ore.; 12 nephews and nieces; 24 grand nephews and nieces, and six great grand nephews and nieces. Preceding him in death was his father, Melvin E Olmstead (Mel O’s Camera Shop), sisters, Kit Kirk and Marcia Dierks.
John was born and raised in The Dalles. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1965. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, obtaining Eagle Scout rank and was a Boy Scout adult volunteer for years after his return from the Army. He joined the United States Army in Jan. 1966, and was stationed in Vietnam through Jan. 1968.
Following his military service, he was employed for many years by The Dalles School District 12 in the maintenance department. He was a member of the American Legion. His love for fishing and camping was known by many.
He will be missed by his family, friends, classmates, and friends at the Oregon Veterans’ Home. A Celebration of Life will be held later in the spring.
