Shortly after midnight on Sept. 27, 2017, Evelyn Ruth (Tschudy) Way went to Heaven to be with Jesus. She was living at the Oregon Veterans’ Home at the time, and was 92 years old.
She will be remembered for her wonderful smile and gracious, kind, personality.
The family would like to thank the folks at the Oregon Veterans’ Home for their caring support. Prior to moving to the OVH, she lived at Flagstone Senior Living and had many friends there.
Evelyn was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, on March 31, 1925, to Burris and Maude Tschudy. She met Melvin Way through her friend Jeanie. Jeanie’s husband was a shipmate of Mel’s in the Navy during WWII. Evelyn and Mel exchanged letters and started dating after the war.
They were married on the first of Sept. 1946, in Ohio and had been married for 49 years when Mel passed away in 1996. They had three children; Terry, Bonnie, and Jack. Due to Mel’s work in construction, they moved around a lot.
In addition to Ohio, they lived in Ariz. and Wash. state before settling in The Dalles and other towns in Oregon.
As an example of how much they moved around, Terry graduated from Wahtonka High School in The Dalles in 1966, Bonnie from Warrenton High in 1967, and Jack from Scappoose High in 1970.
After Mel retired, they returned to The Dalles to stay.
Evelyn’s happiest times centered around raising her children, gardening, and sports. Her many rose plants were always beautiful.
Her love of sports began back in Ohio. After graduating from high school, during WWII, she played women’s semi-professional basketball.
She never missed any of her children’s events, no matter how far the travel. She was an avid Portland Trailblazers fan. She even had a Wheaties box with Clyde Drexler’s picture on it. She enjoyed her daily happy hour get-togethers with her dear friends. She also loved putting together jigsaw puzzles. She volunteered at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center’s gift shop for several years. She was an ace at playing golf and pinochle. Her skill at both resulted in her name being on numerous plaques and trophies at the Country Club.
She was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in The Dalles.
She enjoyed traveling to visit her children, who were stationed overseas. Her travels included Belgium, England, Germany, and Lithuania. She had a great time everywhere she went.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband. She is survived by her three children, Terry Way and wife Arlene of The Dalles, Bonnie Earls and husband Bob of The Dalles, and Jack Way and wife Paula of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is also survived by six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
