The Dalles, Oregon

April 5, 1925 - June 24, 2018

Doris June Snyder Smith was born on April 5, 1925, in Lancaster, Pa., to Grover and Josephine Snyder. She was the youngest of six children. Raised in Lancaster, Doris graduated from JP McCaskey high school in 1943 and entered nurses training at Lancaster General Hospital as a cadet and graduated as a registered nurse in 1946.

In September 1947, Doris and a friend flew to Richland, Wash., to work at Kadlec Hospital. She worked there three years, then worked as an office nurse for three years.

She met the love of her life, Earl H Smith, and they were married on September 20, 1952. In November 1953, they bought an oil company in The Dalles, Ore., and renamed it Smith Oil Company. Doris was the bookkeeper for 35 years, until they retired in 1978.

Doris and Earl loved to travel in the United States and abroad. Doris also loved to bowl and traveled to tournaments all over the country with her teams.

Doris was a volunteer at Mid-Columbia Medical Center for 32 years and is a member of Women's Memorial in Arlington Cemetery.

Doris lived in The Dalles for over 60 years and has many friends from the surrounding area and abroad. Doris lived at The Springs at Mill Creek for over nine years and has many friends at the community. She loved living at Mill Creek and she loved living in The Dalles. She would live no other place - this is her home, now and forever.

Doris has two children, Craig (wife, Suzanne) and Kim (husband, David); and five grandchildren: Brittany, Joshua, Brianna, Kelly, and Ben.

A memorial service for Doris will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on July 6, 2018, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at Taylor Hall.

In lieu of flowers, Doris requested a donation be made to Home At Last in The Dalles or The Dalles Senior Center.
