Elizabeth M. Lundstrom, age 103, passed away Aug. 10, 2018, at Angel Wings AFH, in Burien. She was born Sept. 21, 1914, to Ethyl and Walter Klindt of The Dalles, Ore.
She grew up on the Klindt farm where the Port of The Dalles is now located. There, she was fortunate to be brought up by a loving family and caring friends, with the river and the mountains at her doorstep.
She had a curious mind and shared a love of nature with her sisters, Doris and Kathleen. At the age of 14 she and Kathleen took her father's boat, rowed across the Columbia River, climbed to the top of the Klickitats, and camped overnight. Betty later said "we just wondered what was on the other side."
She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1932 and soon moved to Portland, Ore., attending Decker Business College where she learned secretarial skills that were essential at the time, including shorthand, dictaphone, mimeography, and typing. During the Depression, she worked for the Multnomah County Public Assistance Office and later the U.S. Attorney's Office.
She married Philip Lundstrom in 1939. They moved to Camp Roberts, Calif., where he was stationed during WWII. Betty moved to Paso Robles near the camp and worked for the judge advocates office.
After the war, they returned to Portland briefly, but Philip landed some temporary work with Pacific Car and Foundry (later known as PACCAR) so they moved to Renton, Wash. Temporary became permanent. They settled down, raised four kids, and became involved with many clubs and organizations in the community. That didn't stop her from returning to The Dalles, where her brother, Henry, and his wife, Phyllis, carried on with the farm. Later, Henry and Phyllis’s son, Philip Klindt, ran Klindt's Booksellers and their other son, Paul Klindt, became an orchardist in nearby Parkdale, Ore. Because she was Philip's aunt, by extension, Betty was known to many friends in The Dalles as "Aunt Betty."
Betty was preceded in death by her daughters Sandy and Kathy (Phil Kiser).
She is survived by her sons, Phil Jr. (Shannon Kennedy), Eric (Kelly Wilson) and grandchildren (children of Kathy), John, Jason and Jeff Kiser of Great Falls, Mont., and Nelson Lowe of Anchorage Alaska.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Wells Ave. S., Renton, Wash. 98057, on Sept. 22, 2018, at 1 p.m.
