DRIVERS ON West Sixth Street near Safeway may have noticed an apparent panhandler May 4 carrying a sign. But instead of asking for work or food, driving instructor Larry Fairclo of Diamond F Driving School was warning motorists about the dangers of using a cell photo for calls or texts while at the wheel. Fairclo got the idea for the stunt from another instructor at a recent conference. In a test of teen drivers involving a cone obstacle course, drivers who had perfected the course while undistracted flatted from 40 to 100 cones while trying to text, Fairclo said. A ticket for cell phone use in Oregon could result in as much as a $500 fine. Online: www.diamondfdrivingschool.com.
