Charles Telakis of the Yakama Nation resets a salmon pole Thursday, May 9, one of many in a long line of poles, as he fishes with hook and line for spring salmon at the Rufus Landing Recreation Area in Rufus. He uses a railroad spike for weight, a spin-and-glow baited with "a family secret" floating above. The spring run is picking up, he noted, and typically continues through mid June. Sport salmon fishing is closed on the Columbia River, but tribal subsistance fishing continues.
